Grave reopened, body sent back to hospital after relatives bury the wrong woman

Synopsis

Hospital authorities mistakenly switched dead bodies Relatives failed to identify the mistake and buried the wrong body Hospital officials opened tomb and took the body after realising mistake

In a very unlikely event, relatives buried the body of a wrong woman after hospital authorities mistakenly switched dead bodies.

The incident took place at a hospital in Chungathara in Malappuram. Bodies of two women, Eliyamma and Mariyamma, were kept in the mortuary of the hospital.

On June 5, relatives of Eliyamma, a native of Muttikadavu, approached hospital and the authorities accidentally handed over the body of Mariamma and the family members buried her body.

It was only when the daughter of Mariamma turned up the hospital demanding her mother's body that hospital authorities realised the blunder. The officials then contacted

Eliyamma's relatives and with their permission opened the tomb and brought the corpse back to the hospital. The body was later handed over to the actual family.

However, it is not yet known how Eliyamma's relatives failed to identify the deceased before performing the rituals and burying her.
