The wedding of CPI legislator Geetha Gopi's daughter is drawing attention for all wrong reasons. The marriage became a subject of discussion after the pictures of the bride decked in gold jewellery went viral on social media.
The issue has also made its way to discussion within the party as the event was against CPI policy of simple weddings.
The flashy wedding gained much mileage on social media as it took place a month after CPI MLA Mullakkara Ratnakaran's statement against ostentatious weddings.
Ratnakaran had called an attention notion in Kerala Assembly demanding the government to come out with a law to prevent luxury marriages. Chief Minister replied that the state cannot make a law to prevent such marriages, but it is necessary to generate awareness among the public against extravagant weddings. The Chief Minister had also said that Supreme Court had declared such marriages unconstitutional.
Gopi is a two-time CPI legislator from Nattika in Thrissur district. The photos circulating in social media shows the bride covered in gold jewellery.
There are reports that some of the CPI members who attended the wedding raised the issue as they felt that it dented party's image. However, Gopi replied that the wedding was only a normal one that any parent would arrange for their daughter and there is no need to create an issue.
