The BJP has called for a hartal in Kottayam district on Friday to protest the attack on two panchayat members in Kumarakom.
Panchayat members and BJP workers PK Sethu and Jayakumar sustained injuries in the attack and have been admitted to the Kottayam Medical College. The BJP alleged that CPM activists were behind the act.
Sethu and Jayakumar were assaulted by a six-member gang in front of the Kumarakom panchayat office at around 11 am on Thursday. A police team led by the Kottayam DySP has recorded the statements of the two, which said that a group led by CPM activist Ambili attacked them.
However, CPM area secretary NK Prabhakaran dismissed the role of CPM workers in the attack.
