Bhavani Amma, who grabbed the headlines when she became a mother at the age of 62, passed away at a hospital in Wayanad on Monday. She was 75.

The retired school teacher, who hails from Muvattupuzha, died at the DM WIMS Hospital near Kalpetta on Monday early morning. She was suffering from brain and heart issues, while her diabetes was also high.

Popularly known as Bhavani teacher, she had been subject of worldwide media attention after she delivered a baby past her menopause using the IVF procedure, acting on her intense desire to become a mother.

Kannan was born in April 2004. Unfortunately, the baby boy died at the age of two, when he fell into a bucket full of water in the courtyard of their house. In order to get over the grief, Bhavani Amma shifted to Wayanad with a distant relative and have been living there for the last few years.

Bhavani Amma then prompted her husband to marry again. They had a baby but Bhavani Amma was denied permission to see the child. That's when she decided to conceive through the IVF procedure.
