The Kerala Catholic Reformation Movement stated that when a woman confesses her sexual 'sins' before a priest, it often gives the priest a chance to embarass and exploit her.
Putting forward their demand, the group organised a sit-in protest with banners and placards before the archbishop’s house in Kochi.
“The Bible doesn't say that the sacrament of confession should be conducted only by priests. We demand that nuns be allowed to hear confessions from women and children,” said Indulekha Joseph, a spokesperson of the group.
The development comes in the wake of an incident where a minor girl was allegedly raped and impregnated by a Catholic priest in Kannur's Kottiyoor.
However, any reform regarding the current way confessions are done has to come from the Vatican, which doesn't look likely for now.
