A total of 2.3 lakh students in Kerala would get free school uniforms made of handloom materials during the current academic year.
The state government had earlier decided to distribute handloom materials for school uniforms as parts of its plan to revive the dying traditional handloom sector.
The state level inauguration of the programme would be done by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on May 22, said industries minister AC Moideen, who inspected the uniform materials prepared at Hantex, the state co-operative society of handloom weavers.
In the first phase, uniforms would be given free to 2.3 lakh students studying from class one to five, Moideen said. State education minister C Raveendranath was also present on the occasion.
