A jewellery shop owner caught a man trying to steal a gold ring by swapping it with a fake one. The owner and locals handed over 56-year-old Bijukumar, a Karamana Thaliyal resident, to the Kattakkada police.

Thiruvananthapuram: A jewellery shop owner caught a man trying to steal a gold ring by swapping it with a fake one. The shop owner and locals handed over 56-year-old Bijukumar, a Karamana Thaliyal resident, to the Kattakkada police.

The accused is a former KSRTC driver. He visited Krishna Jewellery in Kattakkada around 10 AM yesterday, pretending to buy gold. The shop owner felt suspicious and kept a close watch on him. Bijukumar used a gold-covering ring from his pocket to pull off the theft. He checked a few rings and cleverly swapped a real gold ring with the fake one while the staff was calculating the bill.

He then tried to leave the shop, claiming he was short on cash and would return later. The alert shop owner noticed his suspicious behavior and quickly locked the glass door to stop him. They checked the swapped ring and confirmed it was fake. The staff, the owner, and nearby people caught the man and handed him over to the cops. Kattakkada police registered a case, produced the accused in court, and remanded him.
