This is why Sri Krishna Mutt in Udupi is not celebrating Krishna Janmashtami

Synopsis

There are two ways of deciding dates for festivals- Lunar and Solar calendar Those following the Lunar Calendar celebrate Krishna Janmashtami on August 14 Those practising Solar calendar will celebrate Krishnashtami on September 13, 14

Udupi is famous for Sri Krishna Mutt, and Krishna Janmashtami is the biggest festival of the city. But there are no celebrations on Krishnashtami on August 14 in Udupi Mutt. Here is the reason.

Dates are calculated according to Hindu calendar in two ways- lunar and solar calendar. Accordingly, the lunar calendar specifies the end of Ashada and the date for Krishnajanmashtami as August 14. ISKCON is celebrating this date with grandeur.

However, according to the Solar calendar, it is still the month of Ashada, and no celebrations are held during this season. However, the grand celebration of Krishna Janmashtami will be held on September 13 and 14 in Udupi Krishna Mutt, according to the solar calendar.

September 13 will be the first day of the festival in Udupi when the entire car street (Rathabeedi) would be illuminated, filled with different groups of; people with music and paint (vesha) including tiger dance.

On September 14, Vitlapindi (Dahi handi) is celebrated. It is called Mosarukudike in the local language.

Thus, people from various parts of the country (even foreigners) visit Udupi during the festival. Thus people from Udupi will have to wait for a month to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami.
