The first phase of Namma Metro, the country’s second biggest metro commuting in the country, after Delhi, is completed and will be inaugurated by the President of India Pranab Mukherjee on June 17 and will be open to public from June18. Exactly after a decade of waiting, Namma Metro has been cleared by the Commissioner, Railway safety,  to go operational in the Green Line.  Bengaluru Urban Development Minister K J George announced this in the Assembly Session on Thursday.
The foundation stone for Namma Metro was laid by the then President Dr Manmohan Singh in June, 2006. The 42.30 km long metro is ready for the launch after a decade. The estimated time of completion was 5 years but it doubled due to several hurdles faced during works. Especially the digging of underground tunnel proved a challenge.
The Chief Minister had instructed to complete all civil works by April 2017 but it extended to June, due to clearance that had to be obtained in the Green Line between Nagasandra and Yelachenahalli.
Exactly after one year of the Purple Line from East Byappanahalli to West Nayandanahalli 18.10 km went functional, the Green Line between North Yelachenahalli and South Nagasandra 24.20 km will go operational.
