Animal cruelty: Mass grave of dogs found in Davanagere, suspected to have been buried alive

On April 9, Davanagere city corporation officials dug out minimum 70 carcasses of stray dogs in a dump yard in Avaragolla village of Karnataka. This mass grave of dogs was found after an animal rights activist, Joshine Antony, filed an FIR alleging that the dogs were killed on April 4. 

A team of four veterinary doctors associated with district animal husbandry and veterinary services conducted the autopsy and found that most carcasses had metal wires on their hind limbs and around their necks. On the basis of this, the vets are suspecting that the dogs could possibly have been buried alive.

Samples of the highly decomposed carcasses have been collected and will be sent for further forensic analysis, Bangalore Mirror quoted the vets as confirming.  

Earlier, senior city corporation officials reportedly ordered the killing of a few ‘ferocious dogs’ within their limits. The officials insisted that the dogs were put to sleep in a ‘humane manner’.

Meanwhile, Davanagere Rural Police Station has registered a case against four labourers, corporation officials, and the health inspector under The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, reported the daily.
