Bengaluru’s citizens were shocked when women were molested and groped on MG Road on New Year’s Eve. Six months later, the city’s roads are still considered unsafe by many. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee’s working president Dinesh Gundu Rao is one among them.

Rao said the law and order situation in Bengaluru has improved considerably in the past few months but he wouldn’t allow his daughter to go to MG Road at night. While speaking at an urban debate in Mount Carmel college, the politician urged women to speak out against any atrocity committed against them.

He added that women shouldn’t wait for men to change, The Times of India reported. Rao’s statement is the first official acknowledgement of the horror that took place on New Year’s Eve. Earlier, Home Minister G Parameshwara dismissed the mass molestation incident as something that happens during Christmas and New Year.

A large number of youngsters gathered — youngsters who are almost like westerners. They try to copy westerners not only in mindset, but even the dressing, so some disturbance, some girls are harassed, these kind of things do happen,” he said.

Three months later, the state government introduced new measures to ensure women’s safety. In April, the Bangalore City Police introduced 51 pink hoysalas and a safety app for women in distress.
