A giant fig tree in an apartment complex near Bellandur lake that was facing the axe as its roots were damaging the sewage line has got a new lease of life, courtesy, two brothers - Parth Choudhury (9) and his brother Arjun (7).
These little boys saw what the other grown-up adults failed to see in the fig tree that it had also right to live like everyone in the apartment complex which forced the residents to rethink on their plan to cut the tree.
The fig tree (Ficus racemosa) was everyone's favourite in the Euphoria apartment complex. It was a home to many birds - barbets, parrots and even squirrls. However, its roots spread along the sewage line threatening to damage it. To ensure uninterrupted sewage line, the residents of the apartment complex had decided to chop off the tree.
The little boys who heard it from their parents, argued with the residents that why people ask to save trees elsewhere when they refuse to save one in their own backyard? The residents tried to convince the boys saying they would plant three more trees of that variety. But the boys were not ready to buy their argument. "That would many years to grow," they said. The boys insisted on finding an alternative to save the tree. The boys with the help of their parents traced Bengaluru's tree doctor Vijay Nishant who jumped at the boy's idea to save the tree, reports The Times of India.
The boys had also made a video requesting the residents to pool in money to save the tree. Watch video:
He visited the apartment complex and suggested that he could save the tree without affecting the sewage line by constructing a barrier to prevent its roots from spreading. However, this required Rs 25,000.
Undeterred, the boys went from door to door to raise money to save the tree. They urged the residents to contribute at least Rs 200. The boys also gave up their pocket money. The residents purchased a root barrier costing Rs 7,040. Vijay Nishanth pruned the large roots of the tree, installed a root barrier to save the tree.
