Synopsis

Support has been pouring in for DIG Roopa, ousted for exposing irregularities in the Central prisons at Parappana Agrahara. From former IPS officer Kiran Bedi to Karnataka BJP leaders, Roopa is getting much-needed support from all quarters.

BJP leaders held a protest in front of the Parliament on Tuesday condemning the Siddaramaiah government for transferring the woman officer to cover up irregularities. They are are reportedly planning to hold a protest on July 18 to show their solidarity with the IPS officer in Bengaluru.

On Monday, after Siddaramaiah government unceremoniously shunted her out in a surprise development, first to reach - perhaps - the officer was her husband and Food and Civil Supplies secretary Manish Moudgil. Moudgil reached her office at the Headquarters Department of Prisons on Monday at 11 am. According to Kannada Prabha, he held a closed-door meeting for an hour with his wife and IPS officer Roopa. He reportedly told Roopa not to worry about the transfer and instead it is a duty of the officer to obey the government order. As the news of Roopa's transfer broke out, former IPS officer too came to her support. "Country needs more of her kind," Puducherry Governor wrote.

Now, a Hubli-based organisation has announced that it will present Roopa with 'Jhansi Ki Rani' award in recognition of her dare to bring out the irregularities in the prisons. Gajanan Mahamandali president D Govindrao in a press release said that if not for Roopa's damning report, the dirty underbelly of the prisons may not have come out in the open.

However, she was humiliated by the state government. "We at the Mandali decided to recognise and honour her courage to fight against corruption. We will present a sword to her during the felicitation," reports Kannada Prabha.

DIG Roopa has been transferred for more than 25 times in her 16 years of service and most of the time, she worked in non-executive posts, reports Kannada Prabha.
