Bellandur Lake is on fire, and the smoke is seen erupting out of the water body in Bengaluru, which has constantly been falling prey to the toxic waste it has accumulated.

Bellandur lake went on fire in the wee hours of January 19 and 20. It took more than six hours for 5,000 army men to douse the fire, the last time.

Though authorities and the government visit the Lake, every time it is on fire, and promise to clean the water body, which is filled with sewage, chemical effluents and construction debris, there has been no respite.

According to statistics, Bellandur is the largest lakes in Bengaluru which receives 40 percent of Bengaluru's sewage. The lake is overflowing with froth created due to the chemical deposits caused by detergents and cleaners which have formed a combustible methane gas. This gas has caused the fire.

Either the authorities have taken people and their safety for granted or are just fooling people with promises of 'cleaning the lake'. Despite direction from the Green Tribunal, the lake has not been cleaned. Will the government take any action against the authorities concerned, at least now?
