Bangalore University promises gold medals to rank holders, gives them Rs 500 instead

The 53rd Convocation of Bangalore University witnessed many problems including a possible shortage of gold medals Even though the list of rank holders was published in the University websites, the winners were not given the respective medals The row on distributing gold medals made the university come to a decision to give the students Rs 500 in cash, said Evaluation Registrar

The 53rd Convocation of Bangalore University witnessed many problems including a possible shortage of gold medals, though the list of rank-holders was out sometime back. 

It looks like the bigwigs had an idea what was going to happen and thus the event was not attended by the Chancellor of the University, Governor Vajubhai Vala and Education Minister Basavaraja Rayareddy.

Even though the list of rank holders was published in the University websites, the winners were not given the respective medals. According to the temporary list 380 students were supposed to get the gold medals. But during the event, only 112 students were awarded gold medals. 

When the remaining 268 students eligible for the gold medal demanded that they be given the honour, the University authorities tried to console them by giving them Rs 500 each. But the students continued to protest, but to no avail.

A total of 23,846 students had passed out with distinction, 19,704 in first class, 6,168 in second class and 55,780 students in third class and had graduated from the University.

Registrar (Evaluation) of Bangalore University, Shivaraju stated that the row on distributing gold medals made the university come to a decision to give the students Rs 500 in cash.
