20 armed ex-servicemen deployed to guard waste dumping quarries

Synopsis

Clean marshals deployed to guard waste dumping quarries. BBMP’s scheme to protest quarries from illegal entries and dumping. The guards are armed with single and double barrel guns. The ward level marshals and these marshal-guards are not connected.

In a first time attempt, BBMP has deployed a batch of 20 armed ex-servicemen to guard the waste dumping quarry at the outskirts of the City. This comes in the wake of public protest to dumping waste at the quarry and unscientific disposal of wastes. The guards are deployed from the Karnataka Ex-servicemen Welfare Society, to guard the quarry against illegal entry, reported Kannada Prabha.

In the first phase of the BBMP’s clean-marshals scheme, 20 guards will be deployed in Bellahalli, Mittaganahalli and Bagaluru quarries. BBMP has put them through training and they will start work from Monday. The scheme, supported by the State’s Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement, envisages appointing 208 cleanup marshalls to guard and collect fine from anyone littering and dumping waste.  BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said there is no connection between the ward level marshals and the quarry guards.

The guards will be armed with single and double barrel rifles. They will work in three shifts round the clock.  BBMP has also installed CCTV cameras at the quarries.
