After tomatoes flower prices skyrocket in Bengaluru

The jasmine flower sold at Rs 120 per kg yesterday has shot up to Rs 200 per kg today. The common public is worried about the rising prices of flowers as the festivals are lined up. The Jasmine harvest has reduced considerably and is being supplied from Tamil Nadu. For Varamahalakshmi flower rates will go up by 20 percent, say flower traders.

As soon as the Shravana, the festival month begins the flower prices skyrocket.  Just a few days ago the jasmine flower was sold at Rs 120 per kg has shot up to Rs 200 per kg since yesterday. There is great demand for Champak flower, supposed to be a favourite of Naga, the snake god. Today being Naga Panchami the champak flowers were costliest at Rs 5 per flower. Roses, Sevanthi and Sugandha Raja prices have gone up by 60 per cent price rise.  The common public is worried about the rising prices of flowers as the festivals are lined up and flowers are an integral part of celebrations.

Sevanthi flowers are grown in surrounding regions of Bengaluru like Anekal, Chikkaballapura and Hesaraghatta.  Acute shortage of rain has discouraged farmers to grow Sevanthi.  The Jasmine and Kanakambara are supplied from Tamil Nadu at a higher price, reported Kannada Prabha.

The Jasmine crop has not suffered due to excess rain this year but the harvest has reduced considerably. Hence the price rise. Next week being Varamahalakshmi demand for flowers is going to be highest and accordingly the rates will go up by 20 percent, say flower traders at K R Market.

However, the prices of vegetables have stayed stable. Tomatoes are available at Rs 70 to Rs 80 per KG, which is a 25 percent reduction since last week. Last week the price of tomatoes had touched Rs 90 to 100.
