The Kabaka-Puttur railway station in Dakshina Kannada is set to undergo a significant transformation to improve facilities and passenger convenience. Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta announced that the government has approved ₹2.91 crore for a complete facelift of the station. The project aims to provide modern shelters, better amenities, and a more comfortable experience for commuters, particularly during the monsoon rains and the scorching summer heat. This long-awaited upgrade is expected to enhance the station’s infrastructure and ensure a safer, more efficient travel experience for passengers.
Under the approved plan, Platform No. 1 will receive a large, modern shelter. Currently, the platform has a small shelter measuring just 531 square metres. The new structure will span 3,392 square metres, offering ample protection for passengers from extreme weather conditions. The MP confirmed that the land required for construction has been identified and that work is expected to begin soon. This expansion will significantly improve passenger comfort and convenience at the station.
In addition to the shelter, there are plans to install two lifts near the Foot Over Bridge connecting Platforms 1 and 2. The proposed lift project is estimated to cost around ₹1.33 crore and is currently under review at the railway headquarters. Once implemented, it will make commuting between platforms easier, particularly for elderly passengers and those carrying heavy luggage.
Captain Brijesh Chowta has been actively pursuing these upgrades. In November last year, he wrote to the General Manager of South Western Railway, emphasising the urgent need to expand the shelter and improve basic infrastructure. He highlighted the difficulties passengers face during heavy rains and extreme heat, urging the authorities to prioritise the project.
The Railway Department approved the MP’s request and sanctioned the necessary funds for the project. Following the approval, Captain Chowta thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna, and all officials involved in the process.
The planned upgrades are expected to transform Kabaka-Puttur station into a modern, passenger-friendly hub, benefiting local commuters and travellers for many years to come.
