A shocking and tragic incident has emerged from Shravanabelagola in Hassan district, where a 40-year-old man allegedly murdered his own mother in a fit of rage. The accused, identified as Umashankar, reportedly attacked his mother, 65-year-old Gangamma, because she had not arranged his marriage. The horrifying act has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising serious concerns about domestic violence and mental health.
Reports suggest that Umashankar had been involved in a serious accident two years ago. A year later, while returning from the Kumbh Mela, he suffered another accident that resulted in a severe head injury. Following these incidents, his mental health reportedly deteriorated, and he began exhibiting erratic behaviour.
Family members said he often pressured Gangamma to arrange his marriage, creating repeated conflicts at home.
“Finding a match for someone struggling with mental health is challenging,” a relative explained, highlighting the family’s difficult situation.
On March 26, Umashankar and his mother reportedly had another heated argument about his marriage. The altercation turned violent when he first struck Gangamma on the head with his hands, causing her to collapse inside the house. He then allegedly picked up a stone and dropped it on her head, inflicting severe injuries.
Gangamma was immediately rushed to HIMS Hospital and admitted to the ICU. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, she did not respond to treatment and passed away on the night of March 30.
The Shravanabelagola police visited the scene and have registered a murder case against Umashankar. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
