Bengaluru vegetable prices surge as tomato prices double

Synopsis

Vegetable prices in Bengaluru have surged, with tomato prices doubling from ₹25 to ₹54 per kg and beans rising to ₹96. Unseasonal rain, high temperatures and crop damage have reduced supplies, pushing up prices of vegetables and leafy greens.

Vegetable prices in Bengaluru have surged sharply over the past week, putting additional pressure on household budgets as tomatoes, beans and several other commonly used vegetables become significantly more expensive. Tomato prices have more than doubled from ₹25 to ₹54 per kg, while bean prices have increased from ₹70 to ₹96 per kg. The increase has been attributed to crop damage caused by unseasonal rainfall and high temperatures, along with a shortage in market supply.

The sudden price rise has affected not only vegetables but also leafy greens, with the prices of spinach, coriander, mint, dill and gongura increasing substantially. Market sources have also indicated that some retailers may be holding back stocks amid supply concerns, potentially adding to the pressure on prices.

Tomato Prices Double In Bengaluru

Tomatoes have recorded one of the sharpest price increases in Bengaluru's markets. The vegetable, which was selling for around ₹25 per kg last week, is now being sold for approximately ₹54 per kg.

Beans have also become considerably more expensive, with prices increasing from ₹70 to ₹96 per kg.

Several other vegetables have also witnessed price increases, including white brinjal, capsicum, cluster beans, cucumber, radish and beetroot. The sudden rise has left consumers paying more for vegetables that are commonly purchased for everyday cooking.

What Is Causing The Rise In Vegetable Prices?

Crop damage caused by unseasonal rainfall and high temperatures has been cited as the primary reason behind the increase in vegetable prices.

A Horticulture Department official said crops have been damaged and rotted in several areas because of adverse weather conditions. This has reduced the quantity of vegetables reaching Bengaluru's markets, putting pressure on available supplies.

With fewer vegetables arriving at wholesale markets, prices have increased as traders and retailers attempt to meet consumer demand with limited stocks.

Leafy Vegetables Also Become Expensive

The price rise has also extended to leafy vegetables, which have become significantly more expensive in Bengaluru.

The prices of greens such as spinach, coriander, mint, dill and gongura have reportedly doubled. A bunch of leafy vegetables that previously cost around ₹8 to ₹10 is now being sold for ₹25 to ₹30.

Similarly, the price of a bunch of spinach has increased from ₹10 to ₹25, adding to the cost of regular household grocery purchases.

Retailers Face Supply Concerns

Market sources have also indicated that some retailers are holding or hoarding vegetables amid the ongoing supply shortage.

Such practices can further affect availability in retail markets and contribute to price fluctuations. However, the primary factor cited for the current increase remains the reduced supply caused by crop damage and adverse weather conditions.

Consumers are now having to adjust their vegetable purchases as prices remain elevated across several categories.

Vegetable Prices May Remain High

Traders at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) believe vegetable prices could remain high for some time if the current weather conditions continue.

Cloudy weather and forecasts of further rainfall could affect the movement and availability of fresh produce from farming areas. Continued crop damage could further restrict supplies reaching Bengaluru markets.

For consumers, the price rise is likely to remain a concern, particularly as vegetables and leafy greens form an essential part of everyday meals.

With tomatoes, beans and several other vegetables already seeing substantial increases, consumers may have to wait for supply conditions to improve before prices begin to stabilise.
