Sunil Chhetri signs two-year contract extension with Bengaluru FC

Sunil Chhetri is an Indian striker and is the nation’s highest goal-scorer. He has been playing for Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League since 2013 and won the title on an occasion. Recently, he signed a two-year extension.


Indian striker and legend Sunil Chhetri has been rewarded for his consistency yet again. He has signed a two-year contract extension with his Indian Super League club Bengaluru FC.

Chhetri signed for the side first in 2013. Although he had has quite a few loan spells with other clubs while being associated with The Blues. Nonetheless, a contract extension means that he is likely to stay with the club for ten seasons.

“I’m really happy to have signed on for two more years at Bengaluru FC. The city is home now, and the people at this club are like family to me. It feels like just yesterday that I signed for the first time here, and I have to say the journey has been nothing short of special. I love this club, the supporters and the city, all three of which I have a strong bond with, and I’m looking forward to being part of many more great moments with them,” he told Bengaluru FC after penning the new deal.

“Sunil has been an integral part of this club since day one. We all know what he, as a player, brings to the team. But, his presence as a leader has been equally crucial to us and especially, to the youngsters coming through the ranks. He is a role model, and his influence and application has been paramount to our success. Over the last eight years, he has made this city his home and we are really happy that he has committed his future to Bengaluru FC,” said Mandar Tamhane, BFC CEO.

Chhetri has played 203 matches for the side, scoring 101 goals. He managed to win six titles with the side, including the ISL on an occasion. Individually, he has won 11 accolades, including the prestigious Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri from the Indian government.

BFC managed to finish seventh in the ISL last season, failing to qualify for the playoffs. Despite the unstable season, the BFC management has shown faith in India’s top striker and the club legend.
