In a major development in the investigation into singer Zubeen Garg's mysterious death in Singapore, his cousin and Assam Police DSP Sandipan Garg, has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Assam Police Service (APS) officer Sandipan, who had travelled with the popular Assamese singer to Singapore and was reportedly present during the incident, was taken into custody after multiple rounds of questioning. CID officials had earlier interrogated him and several of Zubeen’s close associates as part of the ongoing probe.
The officials will produce Sandipan Garg before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court today.
Before Sandipan Garg's arrest, four others, the singer's manager Siddharth Sharma, event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and musician Amritprava Mahanta, had already been taken into custody.
The 52-year-old singer, known for his iconic Assamese and Bollywood songs, died on September 19 in Singapore while swimming near an island. Zubeen was on a yacht trip during his visit to perform at the North East India Festival when the tragic incident took place.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that out of eight people summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with singer Zubeen Garg’s death, only one person has responded so far.
Sarma informed that Rupkamal Kalita, who was present on the yacht when the 52-year-old singer drowned while swimming in the sea near Singapore on September 19, has complied with the summons issued by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The Chief Minister said that the remaining seven individuals, who were also with the singer during his final moments, have not yet communicated their willingness to return to Assam and assist in the investigation. "They have not said anything about coming to Assam to help in the probe," Sarma told reporters in Guwahati.
The CID had earlier summoned eight out of the eleven people who were on the yacht with Zubeen at the time of the incident. The case has taken a serious turn after one of Zubeen’s band members, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, alleged that the singer was poisoned by his manager Siddharth Sharma and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta.
