The West Bengal Assembly today passed a resolution to change the state’s name from West Bengal to just Bengal.
In the resolution, it is proposed the following: West Bengal would be known as Bengal in English, Bangla in Bengali and Bengal in Hindi.
However, this would require the approval of the Parliament.
The state cabinet had approved this resolution early this month. The cabinet had toyed with other names such as Banga and Bongo.
"We have taken the decision. Bangla and Bengal. We had told the centre to please accept the decision of the assembly. We would like it passed in next parliament session," the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee said after the resolution was passed today.
''We are proud today. Those who objected the resolution will not be forgiven by history," the firebrand leader said after the resolution was passed.
Earlier, the name of the state’s capital city was also rechristened from Calcutta to Kolkata.
The previous CPM government had also made an unsuccessful attempt to change the name of the state.
Now all eyes are on the Parliament to bring a constitutional amendment to that effect.
