Synopsis

A 25-year-old man remained trapped for nearly 12 hours after his motorcycle fell into a mud-filled pit on a deserted road in Kanpur Dehat, 45 km from the city, and died later while being treated at a local hospital on Wednesday.

A 25-year-old man spent nearly 12 hours trapped inside a mud-filled roadside pit in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur Dehat before succumbing during treatment on Wednesday. The victim, Dhirendra Kumar, worked as a private guard at Panki Power House. On Tuesday evening, around 6 pm, he was riding back home along Rura Shivli Road near Kadri village when his motorcycle reportedly lost balance and fell into a deep roadside pit filled with thick mud.

Police said because of the darkness and the depth of the pit, he was not noticed by any passer-by. Trapped in freezing temperatures, buried in mud, Dhirendra remained stuck through the night, battling cold and exhaustion.

It was only around 6 am on Wednesday that a group of farmers discovered him smeared in mud and barely responsive. Local village head Ankush Kumar and Vijay Kumar, along with villagers and passers-by, rushed to rescue him. Villagers lit a fire to warm him, cleaned the mud off his face, and immediately called a 102 ambulance. He was rushed to a hospital in Shivli. However, Dhirendra died during treatment.

His grieving brother, Brijendra Kumar, said the family had grown anxious when Dhirendra failed to return home through the night. They received his death news the next morning.

Shivli police station in-charge Praveen Yadav said that the dark road and the pit's depth made him invisible and he couldn't be rescued.

The incident has once again raised questions about roadside safety and unattended pits. On January 17, software engineer Yuvraj Mehta died after his SUV plunged into a water-filled construction pit in Greater Noida’s Sector 150, a incident that sparked outrage.
