DMK sweeps Trichy, Virudhunagar

Here are some of the results that are pouring in: 

* The DMK has won 17 wards in Trichy followed by the Congress which won in three wards. MDMK had garnered two wards followed by one each for ADMK and AMMK. DMK has emerged as a winner in the Kulithalai municipality and six town panchayats in Karur district.

*  DMK-led alliance has pocketed the Virudhunagar municipality after securing 28 out of 36 wards. While the DMK won on 20 wards, its ally Congress secured eight wards. The AIADMK could manage just three seats.

DMK in driver's seat, AIADMK second

The DMK is leading in urban local bodies across Tamil Nadu. 

According to the latest data available, out of the total 1,374 corporation wards in the state, DMK has so far won 57 and the main opposition AIADMK 7 and others 8.

The Congress party has won on seven wards while CPI-M registered victory on two seats.

In municipalities, the DMK has bagged 248 wards followed by 79 for the AIADMK. 

In town panchayats, the DMK has won on 1,251 wards while the AIADMK has managed to win 354 wards

Denied nomination by DMK, S Gomathi wins as independent in Chennai's Ward 2

S Gomathi, an Independent candidate residing in Kaatukuppam in Ennore, had emerged victorious in ward 2 of the Chennai Corporation. 

The ward, which comes under Zone 1 (Thiruvottiyur) of the Chennai city corporation, is reserved for women. 

Media reports said that the 38-year-old and her husband Santosh Kumar were DMK members. She decided to contest as an independent candidate when the party denied them a nomination

Opposition AIADMK is leading in seven municipalities and 27 town panchayats.

In Valparai municipality, the DMK won all the 17 wards in which it contested. Coalition parties won on two wards, the AIADMK in one ward and the Independent in another.

Early trends indicate that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is leading in 14 corporations, 51 municipalities and 182 town panchayats. According to reports, the AIADMK is leading in one corporation, five municipalities and 28 town panchayats. 

Interestingly, the BJP is leading in four town panchayats.

The counting is being undertaken at 268 centres. The election was held for 12,838 posts in 21 corporations, 138 municipalities, 490 town panchayats and 649 urban local bodies in the state. A total of 74,416 candidates in the fray.

Postal ballot box broken open after key goes missing

Officials misplaced the key of the postal ballot box in the Sholinganallur zone counting centre in Greater Chennai.

The box lock was broken with the candidates' consent. 

A similar incident was also reported from the Sivakasi district.

When EC fact-checked state BJP chief

Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai was fact-checked by the Election Commission on Monday when he cast aspersions on the voting for the 2022 urban local body elections.

Taking to Twitter, Annamalai had posted tagging the Election Commission of India: "With the DMK govt claiming, the just concluded local body polls went without a hitch, this video compilation will show the extent of malpractices and abuse of power that TN has seen on the day of voting! Hoping that the Election Commission of India will not close its eyes on the counting day (22nd February)"

Along with the post, the BJP state chief also shared video clips of alleged malpractices being undertaken on voting day at Tiruvarur, Chennai and Pudukottai.

Fireworks banned, TASMAC outlets shut

Fireworks have been banned within 100 meters of the counting centres.

Overall, around 1.13 lakh police personnel have been deployed across the state. 

The state election commission also ordered the closure of TASMAC stores within 5 km of polling stations. As a result, a total of 1,700 TASMAC stores in Tamil Nadu have been closed.

11,799 surveillance cameras installed

A three-tier security has been provided at the counting centers comprising of armed forces, Tamil Nadu special police and local police personnel. According to reports, around 7000 personnel have been deployed in Chennai alone.

11,799 surveillance cameras are installed and monitored at the counting centers. Patrol vehicles equipped with surveillance cameras have been parked near the centers.

Here's how the counting will progress

According to the state election commission, party candidates and counting agents were told to reach the area by 7 am. 

Mobile phones are not allowed inside the counting centres. Thereafter, the strong room where the EVMs were stored on Saturday. The room will be opened in the presence of candidates. 

The EVMs shall be brought to the counting tables by 8:30 am after the p[ostal ballots are counted. The results will be announced through loudspeakers after the counting process for a ward gets completed.

Counting of votes for elections to the Tamil Nadu urban and local bodies will be undertaken on Tuesday. The votes will be counted at 268 centres across the state. On Saturday, polling was held in over 12,500 wards across 21 corporations, 138 municipalities and 489 town panchayats.
