Chennai Police central crime branch has arrested former Madras and Calcutta High Court Judge C S Karnan for passing defamatory remarks against women and several judges of the Supreme Court and high courts in his online videos.
Karnan had been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including Section 228 (intentional insult or interruption to public servant sitting in judicial proceeding), Section 509 (word or gesture intended to insult the modesty of any woman) and Section 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot).
Karnana had allegedly made defamatory and offensive comments against Supreme Court and High Court judges and their wives and uploaded them online.
The Madras High Court had recently come down heavily on the police for not acting in the case. The police had then submitted that, "Retired Justice CS Karnan was continuously uploading many videos with the most disgusting content in Youtube channel namely Anti Corruption Dynamic Party ACDP even after the order passed by this Hon’ble High Court."
All offensive videos were deleted subsequently on November 21 and the hosting channel blocked by YouTube after a police request.
Karnan was the first serving high court judge to have been found guilty of contempt by the Supreme Court in 2017 for allegations against judges. He served six months in a Kolkata jail and was released in December 2017.
