People steal Rs 12, mobile phone as accident victim lies injured on the road

Passersby allegedly turned a deaf ear to the wailing victim and stole his money and clothes instead. A few took pity and called the police. However, that happened after a span of 12 hours.

A complete lack of empathy is the first thing that comes to one's mind when one comes across such a story. As an accident victim lay on the road for 12 hours, crying for help, passersby are 'empathetic' enough to give him a sympathetic look and move on. To add to the notoriety of the incident, there were people who came and stole his mobile phone and did not spare even the Rs 12 in his pocket. 

Fortunately, despite the pure indifference, 35-year old Narendra Kumar still survived. He had received severe injuries to his neck, legs and spinal cord and is presently recuperating at Safdurjung hospital. By profession, a driver in UP's Bijnor, Kumar was returning home from Jaipur on Tuesday evening and was crossing the road near Kashmere Gate bus terminal when he was hit by a speeding car at around 5 pm.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said, "I was flung on the footpath because of the hit by the car. Unable to move because of the injuries, I lay on the roadside through the night."

Police said that passersby finally took pity on him and called the police control room on Wednesday morning after which a PCR van was sent to the spot. He was first moved to Sushruta Trauma Centre before being referred to Safdurjung Hospital. Meanwhile, police have registered a case of rash driving, causing hurt and were even contemplating slapping theft cases againt unidentified persons. Neither the car, nor the thieves who stole Kumar's clothes and belongings have been traced till now.
