GST, Kashmir violence top agenda for Parliament Monsoon session

Synopsis

Noisy sessions are likely as Parliament’s Monsoon session begins today. The opposition parties are likely to target the ruling NDA government over recent developments in Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir violence.

Ahead of the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met opposition leaders yesterday to seek cooperation for the passage of GST bill. In the meeting, Modi urged parties to keep national interests above other things.

So far the Congress has remained non-committal on GST bill as it has certain reservations. It made clear that it will support only when the necessary changes have been made as raised by the party.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar assured that the government will reach out to all parties to evolve a consensus on the GST.

After meeting leaders from all political parties, Modi expressed hope that the session is likely to be productive.

Congress leader and the leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad has hinted that a discussion on the situation in Kashmir should be held.

Among other things, the unsuccessful bidding at NSG, floods in some states, agrarian crisis and terrorism are also likely to be raised.

However, the first day of the session is likely to be adjourned after an obituary meeting to condole the death of Dalpat Singh Paraste, Lok Sabha MP from Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh, who passed away on June 1.
