Pakistan confident China to block India’s entry to NSG

Pakistan is confident India will not be inducted to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), an informal group comprising of nuclear fissile material producers. Paksitan is relying on China, which will oppose India’s bid, despite backing from the US, a senior Pakistani former diplomat claimed.

Zamir Akram, who was Pakistan’s former permanent representative at the UN in Geneva and served at the Conference on Disarmament, shared his views at a seminar on the International Nuclear Order, jointly organised by the Strategic Vision Institute (SVI) and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

Paksitani daily the Dawn quoted Akram as saying that the “chances of India gaining entry into NSG are virtually nil”.

China would veto India joining the 48-nation NSG as it would affect its nuclear cooperation with Pakistan, Akram claimed.

China would ensure both Souith Asian nuclear countries India and Pakistan get membership at the same time, Akram shared.

Akram also added that some other countries are also against inclusion of India and keeping Paksitan away.  

India’s admission to the NSG was backed up by the US after the India –US Civil Nuclear deal was signed in 2005.

In recent months senior Pakistani diplomats have spoke out against the inclusion of India to this exclusive group.
