Synopsis

An elephant killed 15 people in the states of Jharkhand and Bihar Hyderabad hunter Nawab Shafat Ali Khan was hired by the Jharkhand government to hunt down the elephant Incidentally today (August 12th) is World Elephant Day

Jharkhand government hired Hyderabad hunter Nawab Shafat Ali Khan to hunt down an elephant which crushed four people in Bihar before crossing into neighbouring Jharkhand killing 11 more.

According to Sakshi news, Jharkhand’s chief forest and wildlife conservator LR Singh and his team went on a week-long mission but failed to tranquilise and capture the elephant. The rocky terrain and thick vegetation and visibility of just 15 feet of Sahibganj district made it impossible for capturing the elephant.

The elephant separated from its herd in the Sahibganj forest area invaded villages and killed 15 tribals, out of which nine belonged to the Paharia tribe. After their unsuccessful mission, the Jharkhand government with a team of forest officials decided to shoot the elephant before it killed any more people.

In this shootout mission, the Jharkhand government hired the only licenced hunter in India, Nawab Shafat Ali Khan from Hyderabad. Nawab Shafat has 40 years of hunting experience in which he killed 12 leopards, 7 elephants, 3 tigers, 15,200 wild boars, 1300 wild dogs, 1000 wild buffaloes on the behest of different state governments.

Animal lovers expressed their anger on the decision of Jharkhand government to shoot an elephant ahead of World Elephant Day on August 12th. In the past Central Minister Maneka Gandhi created an uproar in the Parliament for hiring Nawab Shafat to shoot wild animals.

LR Singh said that they would kill the elephant anytime soon now that hunter Nawab Shafat is on its trail.
