A 19‑year‑old newlywed woman was discovered hanging under suspicious circumstances at her in‑laws’ residence in Bagadpur Choiya, Amroha district, late Tuesday night. The incident occurred just hours after she allegedly phoned her father, pleading to be taken home and expressing fear for her life.
Pushpendri Devi, married to Ompal, a farmer from Khumawali in Gajraula, on February 13 this year, was found dead at her matrimonial home. Her family has accused her husband and in‑laws of murdering her after harassing her for an additional dowry demand of Rs 10 lakh.
Circle officer Pankaj Kumar Tyagi confirmed that an FIR has been registered against Ompal, his father Rajendra, mother Indrawati, and two others under BNS sections 80 (dowry death) and 85 (cruelty by husband or relatives), along with sections 3/7 of the Dowry Prohibition Act
The body was sent for post‑mortem, with ligature marks noted around her neck. Tyagi stated that the exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy, and police teams have been formed to trace the accused, who remain at large.
Pushpendri’s father, Balbeer Singh, recounted her final call around 6.30 pm on Tuesday. He said she was crying helplessly, begging him to take her home, and repeatedly warning, “Papa, they will kill me.” Before he could reach her, news of her death arrived.
Her family alleged she was assaulted, killed, and then hanged to make it appear as suicide. They claimed she had been subjected to continuous harassment since marriage over the alleged demand for Rs 10 lakh.
