Assault by patients' relatives: Mumbai doctors go on mass leave

Three doctors were beaten up by relatives of patients last week, alleging medical negligence In their leave applications, the doctors have stated they cannot work when there is threat to their lives  

Around 75 per cent of resident doctors at major health centres in the city, including Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, KEM Hospital, JJ Hospital and Nair Hospital, have gone on leave, according to a report by India Today.

The development comes after three doctors - in the Dhule, Nashik and Sion regions - were beaten up by relatives of patients alleging medical negligence in the past week.

A recent Mumbai High Court order had ruled that the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors cannot go on a strike, prompting the doctors to go on leave instead.

Resident doctors in some parts of Maharashtra have also gone on leave. In their leave applications, the doctors have stated they cannot work when there is threat to their lives.

It is understood that some of the hospitals are setting up stricter security protocols to prevent such incidents from now on.
