Mathura violence: Uneasy calm prevails amid high security deployment

Synopsis

The situation is Mathura’s Jawaharbagh area is under control yesterday. On June 2 clashes between encroachers and police had erupted killing 24 people. Security remains tight in and around the Jawaharbagh area with police and paramilitary forces maintaining vigil.

 

Twenty-four people were killed in the clashes, including two police official. According to PTI, the police have restricted the movement of people on the entrance of Jawaharbagh area.

 

The district administration yesterday got additional deployment from neighbouring districts of Agra, Badayun, and Muradabad.

 

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav yesterday admitted that there were “some lapses” on the part of the police who carried the eviction drive without any intelligence that the encroachers are armed.  

 

"There were some lapses. Police should have gone with full preparation and after holding talks, but there was no information that they would be having so much (arms and ammunition," the PTI quoted Akhilesh.

 

The CM said that senior administrative officials are stationed there to monitor the situation.

 

According to the CM several failed attempts were made with the encroachers to vacate the area. An inquiry has been ordered to look into the violence. The UP has also sought a detailed report about the incident.

 

The encroachers are believed to be members of a ‘satyagrahi’ group called Azad Bharat Vidhik Vaicharik Kranti Satyagrahi.
