Synopsis

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday (December 21) wrote to Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar requesting a transfer of funds under the central government's PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday (December 21) wrote to Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar requesting a transfer of funds under the central government's PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.

Under this scheme, the economically weaker farmers receive an amount of Rs 2,000 from the centre in three installments every year. However, this scheme has not been implemented yet in West Bengal.

In a letter to the Union agriculture minister, Mamata Banerjee said, “I once again request you to kindly arrange to transfer the requisite fund to the State Government, for onward disbursement with full responsibility to the farmer beneficiaries of the state through State Government machinery. After disbursement a list of beneficiaries will be sent to you for your information.”

West Bengal is the only state which has not received any benefits from the PM-KISAN scheme as the administration had opposed the direct transfer of funds to farmers' bank accounts.

In the letter, Mamata Banerjee expressed her desire to be an intermediary for the farmers as a condition to join the PM-KISAN.

The PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme was launched last year in February. It is a Central scheme with 100 percent funding from the central government.
