Palakkad: The Kerala forest department registered a case and began a probe in the death of a 15-year-old pregnant elephant in Palakkad. The elephant died after a pineapple filled with firecrackers exploded in her mouth last Wednesday.
The elephant was left seriously injured after firecrackers hidden in the pineapple exploded and succumbed several moments later. The incident was reported from the fringe areas of the Silent Valley in Attappadi.
Reports suggest that the horrific incident occurred as locals allegedly offered the elephant a pineapple stuffed with firecrackers, and that the fruit exploded in her mouth when the elephant was standing in water.
This is not the first incident of animal cruelty in Kerala.
In a similar incident, a pregnant cat was found dead hanging from a rope tied to a compound wall of a club in Thiruvananthapuram's Paalkulangara in 2019. It is learned that few drunkards who frequented the club had killed the cat.
