While Indian food is hailed across the world, sometimes it feels like the praise is more for the method than the execution. Point in fact - Indian restaurants almost never feature in any 'best' lists.
And this trend bears out in the latest annual '50 best restaurants in the world' - released by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy as well. A lone Indian restaurant - Indian Accent - features on the list, in 87th position.
A Delhi establishment, Indian Accent opened in 2009 and features a modern, fusion-style menu designed by Chef Manish Mehrotra. The food has been described as 'Indian with an international touch'. In layman terms that would be desi ingredients with phoren cooking and plating methods. The combination seems to work, with Indian Accent being highly praised among food aficionados.
Indian Accent is ultimately a brand owned by Old World Hospitality, which was set up by Chef Mehrotra. Delhi aside, the restaurant's has recently opened a branch in the Le Parker Meridien Hotel in New York.
The Diners Club World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy - the association which is doing the awarding, is a club of chefs and food experts who form committees for different regions in the world (27 in all) and vote to pick the best food spots in those locations. They claim to have some 1000 members in total. Rashmi Uday Singh - an award-winning food writer - is the head for India and Central Asia.
