India-Pakistan tensions: Pathankot airbase targeted, blackout in J-K as precaution

Shelling and rocket fire were reported near the border. Jammu and Kashmir are on high alert, with heightened security at Srinagar airport. India's air defense systems successfully intercepted multiple threats.

In a dramatic escalation of cross-border hostilities, Pakistan on Thursday (May 8) launched a coordinated attack using swarm drones and missiles targeting key Indian military installations, including the Pathankot Airbase and strategic locations across Jammu and Punjab. A precautionary blackout has been imposed across Jammu and Kashmir as a security measure, while the region remains on high alert.

Multiple drone incursions were reported, with Indian air defence systems responding swiftly. In Pathankot, a swarm drone attack was neutralised by the Indian Armed Forces before it could cause any significant damage. Simultaneously, Pakistani drones were intercepted over Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, where explosions and flashes lit up the sky, indicating active engagement by Indian defences.

It is repotedly said that artillery shelling was also reported near the India-Pakistan border in Jaisalmer, further raising concerns over the widening scope of the conflict.

Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar airport has been placed under high alert. Intelligence agencies have issued specific warnings that drones could be directed toward the airport. In response, air defence batteries have been deployed, and counter-UAV measures are in place.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force reportedly shot down two Pakistani JF-17 fighter jet after it violated Indian airspace as part of a larger offensive that included attacks on multiple Indian locations. Drone attacks were also thwarted in Udhampur, while another UAV was shot down in Akhnoor.

One drone reportedly struck the Jammu airport, prompting immediate deployment of fighter jets and activation of ground-based air defence systems. India’s S-400 "Sudarshan Chakra" systems intercepted eight incoming Pakistani missiles over strategic areas including Jammu Civil Airport, Samba, RS Pura, and Arnia.

The air defence grid also successfully downed two drones near Jammu University, preventing what could have been a major catastrophe. Rockets were fired into Jammu from across the International Border, marking a significant breach of the ceasefire agreement between the two nations.
