The Punjab and Haryana High Court came down heavily on police personnel for failing to stop Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s supporters from rioting. Several policemen have been suspended for dereliction of duty. However, one policeman braved all odds and fought against the Dera supporters alone.
Wrestler-turned-cop Anil Kumar displayed exemplary courage and bravery to fight off the followers by leading from front. The 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medal winner, who presently works for Haryana Police, was seen charging at the Dera followers.
While many armed personnel from Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), CRPF and Haryana Police were seen running for their lives while being chased by Dera followers, armed with just a cane stick and a helmet for protection, 37-year-old inspector Anil Kumar of Haryana police charged right at them.
Kumar, who had won a gold medal in the men's Greco-Roman 96kg wrestling, lashed out at a group of SSB personnel who were reluctant in taking on the mob.
"Shame on you for backing out like this," Kumar was quoted as saying by Times Of India to SSB personnel. As other security personnels kept backing off, Kumar told them, "People will laugh at us. Give me your weapons; I will take them on alone."
TOI reported that several of the 16,000 strong paramilitary forces ran when the mob charged. This bolstered the mob and they turned more aggressive.
But Anil Kumar’s bravery has proved that he is a role model for an ideal citizen.
