Congress Confident of Win in Assam Polls

Jharkhand Minister and Congress MLA Dipika Pandey Singh on Monday expressed confidence that a major political shift in the upcoming Assembly elections was underway in Assam. Speaking to the media, Singh claimed that the people of Assam have long been "upset" with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's administration, asserting that the public is ready for change.

"In the future, a government of the common people will be formed there. Gaurav Gogoi will be the Chief Minister there."

Election Schedule and Political Landscape

A day earlier, the Election Commission announced that in Assam, elections for all 126 Assembly constituencies will be held in a single phase on April 9, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. Following the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into immediate effect in all poll-bound regions.

Assam will witness a fight between the incumbent BJP-led NDA government and Congress for the 126-seat assembly. The BJP government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, will look to secure a third consecutive term, while the Congress aims to defeat the ruling party to return to power. In the 2021 elections, the NDA, comprising the BJP, AGP and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), won 75 seats. The BJP is the largest partner in the alliance with 60 seats. Voter turnout was as high as 86.2 per cent with over 2. 2 crore registered voters in 2021.

Focus on Rajya Sabha Polls

Focusing on the Rajya Sabha underway today, the Jharkhand minister emphasised that these polls are vital for the country's democratic interests. "This time, Congress also has the right to contest the Rajya Sabha elections. I am fully confident that all our candidates will win," she said.

The biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha to fill 37 seats across 10 states began today, with counting of votes set for the same day at 5 pm. The term of 37 members who were elected from Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana will conclude in the month of April, vacating the seats for new members to be elected.
