Delhi Woman Sees Foreign Backpackers, Says Indian Youth Are Missing Out: ‘I Felt Jealous’ (WATCH)

A viral Reddit post by a Delhi woman sparked a debate on how young Indians approach life compared to European backpackers. Meeting carefree travelers taking a gap year made her jealous, contrasting their adventurous lifestyle with the intense academic and career pressures faced by Indian youth.

A Delhi woman’s candid observation about foreign backpackers in the capital has sparked a conversation online about how young Indians approach education, careers, travel and life experiences. In a viral Reddit post, the 23-year-old described meeting a group of European backpackers in their early to mid-20s and said their carefree approach to life left her feeling a “tinge of jealousy.”

According to her post, the backpackers were spending a couple of weeks in Delhi and had taken a year off to travel around the world. Despite having good educational backgrounds and being uncertain about their career plans, she said they appeared relaxed and comfortable with keeping their futures open.

“They were in their early to mid 20s and decided to take the year off, just to travel and explore the globe. They had good education and were not quite sure what to do with their careers but were still so carefree and stress-free,” she wrote.

She said their travel plans included mountaineering in South America, taking a train journey across China and diving in the Pacific Ocean near Australia.

The woman also noted that the travellers were not necessarily from wealthy families and were choosing destinations across Asia and South America where travelling can cost relatively less. Their lifestyle prompted her to contrast their experiences with the pressure faced by many young Indians.

“A lot of Indians their age have spent their lives grinding and toiling through school, college, competitive exams, UPSC, MBA (including me), tackling poor infrastructure, pollution and corruption,” she wrote.

She further argued that Indian society often views taking a year away from education or work with anxiety.

“In Indian society, there is such a big fear of losing out a year too. Nobody is really concerned about making the best out of life and having adventures, lasting experiences and memories. I must say I felt a tinge of jealousy with how chill, adventurous and open ended their lives were.”

The post triggered a wider discussion on Reddit. One user wrote, “We are just coping and unaware of so many experiences. It should have been so much different. JEE, MBA, UPSC -- all these races to end up where?”

Another commenter said, “I live in Sweden. Here, every person in their early 20s travels the world without even worrying about what they want to do in their life.”

A third user pointed to differences in career and social-security systems, while another shared their own experiences of taking breaks from college and work to backpack across India and Southeast Asia.

The viral discussion has since raised questions about gap years, academic competition and whether young people in different countries get similar opportunities to travel and explore before settling into careers.
