People in Delhi-NCR woke up to a huge surprise on Wednesday morning. After battling extreme humidity and heat late into the night, the sky was covered with dark clouds by dawn. Suddenly, heavy rain, thunder, and strong winds blowing at 30-40 km/h hit the entire region. The change was so quick that people were left wondering when the terrible heat would finally break.
For the past few days, the capital was struggling with news of severe heatwaves and record-breaking temperatures. On Monday, the temperature had soared to 42.3°C, making it one of the hottest days in April. But this sudden rain has definitely brought relief by lowering the temperature. The maximum temperature on Tuesday was recorded at 39.2°C, and it's expected to be around 38°C on Wednesday. However, the big question remains—will this relief last, or will the heat make a comeback?
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an active Western Disturbance is behind this dramatic change. It is interacting with a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan, north-west Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana. As this system moves forward, it could bring not just rain but also dust storms and thunderstorms. This pattern is usually seen during the pre-monsoon phase, but its intensity is higher this time.
The IMD had already issued a 'Yellow Alert' to warn people. Amidst strong winds and lightning, the administration has urged everyone to be cautious. Experts believe that such sudden weather changes can cause damage, especially to weak structures and in open areas.
One positive outcome of this rain was the improvement in Delhi's air quality. The rain washed away dust and pollutant particles from the air, causing the AQI to drop and allowing people to breathe cleaner air.
According to the weather department, light to moderate rain and strong winds may continue in the coming days. But experts are warning that this might only be temporary relief. As soon as the effect of the Western Disturbance weakens, temperatures could rise again. For Delhi-NCR, this weather has become a mystery—while there's relief on one hand, the shadow of uncertainty looms on the other.
