Synopsis

Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar asserted that a criminal's caste is irrelevant, responding to CM Samrat Choudhary's 'sarcastic' remark about police asking for caste during encounters. The CM also called for strict police action against criminals within 48 hours.

Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar on Saturday said that crime has no link with caste and asserted that a criminal must be treated as a criminal irrespective of social identity.

"A criminal is a criminal, caste has nothing to do with it," the DGP said while responding to remarks made in the backdrop of a political statement on police action during encounters.

The statement comes after Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, while addressing a programme in Gaya on Thursday, made a 'sarcastic' remark suggesting that police personnel should ask the caste of a criminal before opening fire during an encounter.

"Some people are saying that caste should be asked during a police encounter. I say, of course! Ask the caste before you open fire. What common sense is this?" the Bihar CM said while addressing a gathering at the Bihar Police Salary Package Insurance Benefit Distribution Programme.

CM on Swift Police Action and Good Governance

The Chief Minister further emphasised that law enforcement agencies must act swiftly against criminals and ensure a timely response in cases of challenge or resistance to the police. CM Choudhary stated that if any criminal challenges the police, strict action must follow within 48 hours.

"I have definitely said, there are no two ways about this, that if someone challenges the police, they must be answered within 48 hours. It shouldn't take longer," he said.

Reiterating his government's stance on law and order, the Chief Minister said that criminals must not be spared under any circumstances and stressed that policing is essential for good governance.

"Police are for good governance. It is for strictness. And we have made several laws for various things. Efforts are being made to bring many things into the lives of common people. But criminals should not be spared under any circumstances," he added. (ANI)
