Crime against women declined by 21.1 per cent in 2020, reveals National Crime Record Bureau report

It also revealed that the bulk of cases of crime against women were filed under the heading of 'Cruelty by Husband or his Relatives' (30.2%), followed by 'Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty' (19.7%), 'Kidnapping and Abduction of Women' (19.0%), and 'Rape' (7.2%).
Last year, the number of offences against women in Delhi fell by 24.18 per cent. In 2020, there were 9,782 instances reported, compared to 12,902 in 2019. Mumbai has also seen a drop in crime against women, with 4,583 instances last year compared to 6,519 this year and 2,369 cases compared to 3,417 in the same period in Jaipur. Bengaluru had 2,730 instances out of 3,486 in 2019, while Hyderabad had 2,390 cases out of 2,755 in the same year. Despite a downward trend in most cities, crime against women increased by almost 35 and 8% in Kolkata and Lucknow, respectively.
Kolkata had 2,001 instances in 2020, compared to 1,474 in 2019, and Lucknow had 2,636 cases compared to 2,425 in 2019. In 2020, 358 dowry death cases were reported under section 304 B(IPC), with 109 instances reported in Delhi, 48 cases in Lucknow, and 30 and 26 cases in Kanpur and Jaipur, respectively. In 2020, cities reported 10,733 cases of cruelty by husbands or relatives under sections 498A (IPC), with Delhi recording the highest number of cases with 2,570, followed by Hyderabad with 1,226 and Jaipur with 1,043 cases. In 2020, 5,599 women were victims of kidnapping and abduction in cities, according to Section 336(IPC), with 2,637 incidents in Delhi, 484 occurrences in Bengaluru, and 335 cases in Indore.
