Coronavirus: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit tests positive for COVID-19

81-year-old, Banwarilal Purohit tested positive for coronavirus but he asymptomatic and clinically stable

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday.

The hospital issued a statement saying 81-years-old Purohit is asymptomatic and is stable. He has been advised home isolation.

"He is asymptomatic and clinically stable," a health bulletin from Kauvery hospital mentioned. "He underwent further tests and assessment at Kauvery hospital, Alwarpet, Chennai, today," the hospital bulletin read.

"As the infection is mild, he has been advised home isolation and will be monitored by the medical team of Kauvery Hospital," the bulletin further added.

Earlier, Purohit had isolated himself after three more people in the Raj Bhavan in Chennai tested positive for COVID-19. On Tuesday, Raj Bhavan medical officer had carried out a regular health checkup of the Governor and found him "fit and healthy."

Meanwhile, 84 security and fire services personnel deployed in Raj Bhavan had tested positive on July 23, but the Governor's office had then said none of them came into contact with Purohit or senior officials.

A few ministers and lawmakers too have tested positive in the recent past in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu has, so far, reported over 2.5 lakh COVID-19 cases, with Chennai alone registering over one lakh cases.

Union home minister Amit Shah has also tested positive for coronavirus infection. He was admitted to hospital for further treatment.
