Coronavirus: Karnataka minister warns Bengaluru’s Manipal Hospital

Synopsis

Karnataka government has warned a private hospital and asked it to provide 50% of beds for COVID-19 patients

Bengaluru: As the COVID-19 situation is exposing Karnataka government's incapability to handle the state during such a health crisis, a minister has warned a private hospital in Bengaluru over handling coronavirus patients.

Minister Byrathi Basavaraj warned Manipal Hospital of cutting off water and power supplies. This apart, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) also may stop collecting the hospital’s bio medical waste. The hospital is known for exorbitant charges on treatment and consultation.

“If you don’t cooperate with us and give us 50% beds, we will cut the power and water supply and close down the outpatient facility at 6 pm,” a report quoted urban development minister Basavaraj as saying to Arnab Mandal, CEO, Manipal Hospital, Whitefield.

The hospital however has an exclusive branch in Malleshwaram to admit and treat COVID patients who need emergency care. In Malleshwaram, the hospital has set aside its 100-bed facility only for COVID.

As per reports, hospital staff were seeking to convince the minister as they are not in a position to offer 50% of the beds. The hospital is yet to respond to the government's warning.

As the city is witnessing an increase in COVID-19 cases, Bengaluru has over 30,000 active cases. With an increase in patients and government hospitals already full, the government is requesting private hospitals.

Also watch: We know India is battling enemies like the dreaded Covid-19 & a conniving China. But there is a bigger enemy, and that one lies within.
