CBI books railway technician for cheating woman of Rs 20 lakh for jobs

The CBI has booked a South Central Railway technician for allegedly cheating a woman and her son of Rs 20 lakh by falsely promising them jobs. The accused took the money between 2021 and 2025 and provided forged documents to sustain the scam.

The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case against a South Central Railway technician and other unknown public servants for allegedly cheating a woman and her son of 20 lakh under the pretext of securing jobs in the Railways, officials said.

Accused Identified, Probe Initiated

According to the FIR registered by the CBI Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Visakhapatnam, the prime accused has been identified as Moganati Kishore Kumar, a Technician Grade-I at the Carriage & Wagon Depot in Machilipatnam, under the Vijayawada Division. The central agency initiated the probe following a formal written complaint lodged by Kunadharaju Naga Padma, a resident of West Godavari district, and after receiving official clearance from the Union Ministry of Railways.

In her complaint, Naga Padma alleged that she became acquainted with Kishore Kumar in August 2021 through a relative. Kumar reportedly lured her by falsely promising an office staff position at a railway reservation counter for herself and a Ticket Collector (TC) job for her son, Achyuta Varma. He allegedly claimed he would manage officials at the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) office in Vijayawada to secure the appointments.

Deception and Discovery

"Between 2021 and November 2025, the complainant paid a total sum of 20 lakh to the accused. Of this, 12 lakh was transferred digitally via PhonePe from the mobile numbers of the complainant and her family members, while the remaining 8 lakh was paid in cash", a CBI official privy to the investigation details said.

To sustain the deception, the accused reportedly fabricated and provided several forged selection test results and official railway department documents to make the victims believe they had successfully cleared the recruitment process. The fraud came to light when the complainant grew suspicious over subsequent delays and verified the credentials independently, only to discover that the documents were entirely fake.

Legal Proceedings

The CBI moved in after the Railway Board communicated that the Competent Authority--the Minister for Railways--accorded statutory permission under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act to investigate the railway employee.

The CBI has booked Kishore Kumar under Sections 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), 318 (cheating), and 336(3) (forgery for the purpose of cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with Section 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. (ANI)
