Devi (name changed), a young girl from Murarpatti village in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district, called off her wedding for a very unusual reason. She was engaged to a man in the same locality. Just a few minutes ahead of the rituals, she noticed that the groom was chewing Gutkha.

She concluded immediately that he must be a Gutka addict and walked away from the venue in rage. When she was questioned by her family and relatives, she said she would never marry a person like him. Both the families flared up and there was a heated argument between the two parties and the groom’s family ended up lodging a complaint at the police station.
