A married woman was allegedly molested, publicly groped and subjected to an attempted gang rape in Bihar's Nalanda district on the evening of March 26. A disturbing video of the assault went viral on Tuesday, sparking outrage. The victim, a mother of two whose husband works in Nashik, was returning home with groceries when three local youths allegedly intercepted her on a village road. She was reportedly grabbed, dragged in public view, inappropriately touched, and nearly stripped, as the accused attempted to rape her while hurling obscene abuses.

Despite her resistance, and cries for help, the attackers refused to relent. A crowd gathered at the scene and bystanders allegedly recorded the assault on their phones. The incident was captured in multiple clips, lasting about 42 seconds, showing the woman struggling and pleading while being overpowered.

The accused are heard urging others to continue filming as the assault unfolded in broad daylight.

The woman filed a formal complaint on March 27. Police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and launched raids, leading to the arrest of two accused—Ashok Yadav and Matlu Mahto. Both have been sent to judicial custody. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the third suspect, Ravikant Kumar.

Nalanda SP Bharat Soni confirmed the developments, stating, “So far, three people have been named in the case, out of which two have been arrested. They are from the same village of the victim. We formed an SIT under the supervision of Sadar DSP II Sanjay Kumar Jaiswal on the same day, March 27, when the complaint came to light. The arrests were made that very night.”

He added that the probe is ongoing to examine all possible angles, including claims of prior enmity. “It also came to light that the woman had an alleged illicit relation with another youth of the village and she was caught before the incident on March 26. The police are examining all the angles,” the SP said, assuring that those found guilty would face strict legal action.

The incident has also triggered sharp political reactions. Rohini Acharya, daughter of Lalu Prasad Yadav, lashed out at the state government, calling the episode a disgrace and questioning claims of women’s safety in Bihar.
