Bengalureans, get ready for New Year’s Eve at home, BBMP may impose restrictions

The Bengaluru city civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Thursday has hinted at imposing restrictions on new year celebrations in the city by limiting it to homes, in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

Bengaluru: From working at home to New Year’s Eve at home, the coronavirus seems all set to leave its mark as 2020 fades out.

To curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, Bengaluru’s civic body, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), is planning to recommend to the government that New Year celebrations be restricted this year.

Every year, revellers turn up in large numbers in the city’s Central Business District (CBD) areas like MG Road, Church Street, Commercial Street and Brigade road on the night of December 31 to welcome the new year. But the big countdown night may be cancelled this year.

BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad has reportedly written a letter to the city police commissioner, home department and health and family welfare department suggesting a ban on people gathering on December 31 night at MG Road and Brigade Road.

The state government is yet to take a call on this. When the Health and Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar was asked about this, the Minister stated that a few more weeks are left for New Year’s Eve and a decision will be taken after analysing with experts.
