Dear Abu Azmi: By your logic, you should get slapped whenever you speak

Synopsis

The 61-year-old Samajwadi Party politician made a rather sexist remark. In 2014, he had said women should be hanged for sleeping outside of marriage.

The rather shameful and humiliating incident during New Year celebration in Bengaluru, where dozens of women were allegedly molested, has once again brought forth the ugly mindset of our politicians. And now leading this bandwagon of "misogynist" politicos is Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi from Mumbai, who on Tuesday came up with one embarrassing statement after another blaming the women for the incident.

The 61-year-old Samajwadi Party politician's statements on women have been so controversial and sexist in nature that even his son and daughter-in-law, have publically distanced themselves from him. But some people never learn.

The problem with politicians is that they take right to speech for granted and abuse it without taking any responsibility.

Since he is a  politician, one would expect the leader to make responsible statements, but then leaders such as Azmi have nothing "view worthy" to offer instead their mouths are just a reflection of the gutters they crawled out of.

Azmi claimed, “It was bound to happen. Woman call nudity fashion. They were wearing short dresses.”

So by this logic, dear leader, every time, you make such horrendous and abhorring statements, a tight slap is what you deserve.

Agar kahin petrol hoga aur aag aaegi to aag lagegi hi. Shakkar giri hogi to cheeti wahan zarur aaegi

What these politicians need to understand is that what they are doing is blaming the victim in the most demeaning form. Somehow, they feel that the victims were responsible for provoking the assaults.

Even in cities such as Bengaluru and Mumbai, the fact is that women live in a constant fear of being molested. And on top of that when things go wrong,  they are lectured on how they should watch out for themselves. But in all, the blame is not directed where it belongs --- on the assailants.

Azmi wants women to ‘follow Indian culture.’

Dear Azmiji, you should open your mind and update yourselves on some facts. You seem to have missed out the fact that even in "civilisations" where women cover even their entire bodies, sexual harassment and rape are a daily occurrence.

Agar meri behen-beti suraj dubne ke baad gair mard ke sath 31 Dec manaye aur uska bhai/pati uske sath nahi hai ye theek nahi hai

So what do you have to say to women who dress modestly but still get harassed or molested? Maybe in your world,  you would ask them to dig a hole and bury themselves?

Please understand this - eve teasing, molestation and rape are crimes. You can not prevent such crimes by asking women to "hide themselves" or by keeping away from men.

By yes, education, deterrence and strict law enforcement  for all sexes is how we can tackle this. Maybe you too could help.
